Sonam Wangchuk is an engineer and innovator of Ladakh (Leh area of Jammu and Kashmir) of India. He got popularity over India for his innovative work for the society and famed more in news after Amir Khan's character as "Phunsukh Wangdu" or Rancchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad (Rancho) of movie "3 Idiot" of the year 2009, directed by Raj Kumar Hirani. He is recognized as "The real Phunsukh Wangdu".

He stated that he is not Phunsukh Wangdu of a movie. He is a famous Innovator of Ladakh. He founded the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) in 1988. He builds a prototype of Ice Stupa which is an artificial glacier, made to store the wasting stream water during winters in form of giant ice cone (stupas), and release water in late spring for use of Ladakh farmers in times of need.
Mr. Wangchuk started many projects to solve the problem of Ladhakhians. He initiated FarmStays Ladhak for the local homies of Ladakh to get earnings by providing places for the stay of Tourists. This project provides earnings to many homies of Ladhakhians. He achieved many awards for his innovations and engineering talent.
He founded Ladakh Voluntary Network (LVN), a network of Ladakhi NGOs, where he served as the Secretary in its Executive committee till 2005. He was appointed as a member for Elementary Education in the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, in the National Governing Council in 2005. His only goal is serving solution to society by his innovation trends. His work is really appreciable and inspiration to many forthcoming engineers and innovators.
